Veterans Day in Tampa FL 2011

by Dave Tipton on November 11, 2011

We must never forget about those folks both male and female veterans of our armed forces, U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen and Marines- including the nearly 5,600 who have perished in Afghanistan and Iraq.

My family is probably no different than most. I’m a Vietnam era veteran, I have family members that have served in most major wars or conflicts from the American Revolution, Civil War, WW I, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

This is a truly an American holiday celebrating those past and present who arev military veterans. It is both a state and federal holiday that is celebrated on the 11th of November. It was originally known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day in other parts of the world. It was celebrated on November 11th due to the anniversary of signing an Armistice that ended World War I. The main hostilities of World War I were properly finished at 11th hour of 11th Day of 11th Month of 1918 with German signing of the Armistice.

In 1953, a bill changing the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day and including all U.S. veterans was passed by Congress, and President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on May 26th, 1954. It has been recognized as Veterans Day ever since.

Make it a point to thank a veteran on Labor Day for their service to us and to our country and our way of life.
